The city of Florence, dubbed the "Cradle of the Renaissance" for its pivotal role in that period of history, is set in northwest Tuscany along the banks of the River Arno and amid low hills covered with olive groves and vineyards. The Institute at Palazzo Rucellai's central location lends itself to the true Italian experience that this remarkable city has to offer. During your summer in Florence you will not only take classes, but also have the option to take part in organized excursions to other Italian cities, pay visits to historic sites, lunch and dine at characteristic Florentine restaurants, and take trips to the theater for concerts and opera. Your summer in Italy will be experiential, as you wil be able to see the sites where history and art were made.

Because you will be living and taking classes right in the city, there will be many other things to do outside of the classroom. The Florence Program organizes wine tastings, optional excursions and sporting events to keep you occupied, and, on your own, you will certainly want to take in the many other sites that this city has to offer - this alone could take someone an entire summer! Of course, you can't forget that you are in Europe, and that means that a weekend in France or Switzerland is not out of the question. At night you will not need to go far to find entertainment. For the more "refined", the theatre and opera in Florence is world class. You will also enjoy the evening ritual of the la passeggiata, a slow gentle stroll amonst friends and family. Students tend to go to the bohemian area of Oltrarno, south of the river, or to Piazza della Signoria, where the scene is a little quieter. It's always a good idea to pick up Firenze Spettacolo, which is the guide to nightlife in Florence. |
