The University is located on a riverside campus at the heart of the 600-acre National Technological Park at Plassey, three miles above the ancient city of Limerick. Founded in 1972, Limerick has quickly gained a reputation among Irish universities for its innovatively designed courses as well as for its excellent academic standards. The University is home to some collections of fine Irish Art, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Irish World Music Center.

Over 9,300 full-time and 700 part-time students are enrolled at the University. The Study Abroad Office staff will be your guides from the time you enter until the time you depart.

The City of Limerick


Located in the Shannon region in Midwest Ireland, Limerick is a vibrant city of considerable historic and literary interest. It was founded as a Viking fortress in the tenth century and is Ireland's oldest chartered city. Its castles, ancient walls and museums are a testament to its dramatic past. Located on one of Europe's finest rivers, the River Shannon, Limerick is the capital of the Shannon region and is an excellent center for shopping, dining and sport. People travel from afar to see renowned sites such as the "Treaty Stone", King John's Castle and the Hunt Museum. The region is further known for its spectacular landscape, heritage attractions, leisure activities and cultural pursuits.

Program details


The University operates on a semester, modular system. You will register for five modules (courses) per semester, with each module being 3 credits (a total of 15 credits). The academic calendar is also similar to the U.S. system with a Fall and Spring semester during which you can choose and combine modules from all six campus colleges: Business, Education, Humanities, Engineering, Informatics and Electronics, and Science.

Accommodation


Limerick offers two residential villages specifically designed for Irish and international students. Individual two-story terraced houses of 6-8 bedrooms are arranged in landscaped courtyards in an attractive village style. Each house offers single study bedrooms, a large kitchen/living room, two bathrooms, telephone and cable TV. Computer link-ups from individual study-bedrooms to the University network are available upon request.

Student life

 

To assist with your integration into life in Ireland and at Limerick, you will be invited to take part in an extensive orientation program upon your arrival. The staff at the Study Abroad Office also will be available to assist you in your study abroad experience. Each semester the University organizes an off-campus program to show you the "real" Ireland including a day-trip to Dublin during which you will have the opportunity to view the book of Kells as well as attend a play at the Abbey Theater.

A majority of student life revolves around the Students' Center Complex which houses a student café, two pubs, a restaurant, a bookshop, a bank, the student health clinic, a laundry mat and a grocery store. The Student Union organizes activities for 70 clubs and societies. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of sport and recreation programs.

Program Fee



Click here for the program fee. Included in this fee is full-time tuition and CIS administrative fees, housing, all CIS advisory services and personal pre-departure orientation, airport reception, host university orientation, one weekend excursion to Dublin, academic transcript, student union/association fees, Sports/Arena memberhip and CIS comprehensive accident, medical, and travel insurance.
